Majority of insurers use credit reports

Posted on November 8th, 2010 No Comments

According to the Fair Isaac Corporation and Fox Business company, around 95 percent of car insurance providers utilize credit reports.

”Insurers use credit-based insurance scores in a variety of ways. Some companies use it for ratemaking, some for underwriting, others do not use it at all,” said Vice President of the Insurance Information Institute Loretta L. Worters.

To give an example, State Farm uses FICO’s credit scores along with prospective customers’ numbers of open lines of credit, accounts in collection, and late payments when they determine a policy’s price. The majority of car insurance companies also include gender, age, location, driving record and marital status in deciding on premium rates.

Dangers of driving without insurance

Posted on October 28th, 2010 No Comments

Driving without car insurance poses several legal and financial risks.  While avoiding purchasing car insurance may seem like its saving you money in the short run, in the long run, car insurance will save

you both time and money.

If you are pulled over and caught driving without insurance your driver’s license will be suspended.  In order to have your license reinstated you will have to pay a fee of around $100.  Also, if you are caught driving while your license is suspended you will face further consequences.

In addition to having your license suspended, you will most likely have to pay a fine from anywhere between $500 and $1,000.  Also, if you are in an accident and do not have car insurance, other drivers can, and most likely will, take legal action against you.

How car insurance providers determine premiums

Posted on October 20th, 2010 No Comments

When searching for an affordable auto insurance policy, it is important to understand how car insurance providers determine your premium.  A premium is the basic cost a car insurance company charges you to purchase a policy and varies from person to person.

One important thing to know about your car insurance premium is that one of the major factors that car insurers take into account when charging you is your driving record.  For every traffic offense or speeding ticket you have on your driving record, car insurance companies will consider you more risky.  As a result, car insurance providers will charge you more for your premium the greater the number of violations you have on your record.

In addition, car insurance companies take into account your gender and your location.  For years studies have shown men to be riskier drivers than men.  For this reason, car insurance companies will often charge men more for their

car insurance premium.  Furthermore, statistics have shown that accident rates rise the closer one gets to bigger cities.  Urban areas have heavier traffic and people living there are more likely to be in an accident.  As a result, people living in big cities will be charged more for their premium than people living in more rural areas.

Motorcyclists in MA receive $12.1 million

Posted on October 13th, 2010 No Comments

Tuesday, the Massachusetts Attorney General, Martha Coakley, announced that a $12.1 million settlement with five motorcycle insurance providers will be distributed to the thousands of motorcyclists across the state.  Hanover Insurance Group, One Beacon Insurance, Arbella Mutual Insurance Company, National Grange Mutual and Norfolk & Dedham Group were charged with determining premiums using “inflated and un-depreciated” motorcycle values.

The suit says that over 100,000 policies are eligible to receive refunds and 18,500 will receive refunds of over $500.  Coakley stated, “We begun our industry-wide investigation based off a single consumer complaint.

To date, that investigation has forced 12 insurance companies to return more than $33.8 million to Massachusetts motorcycle owners”.

Car insurance and speeding tickets

Posted on October 7th, 2010 No Comments

One of the major factors that car insurance companies consider when deciding your

car insurance premiums is your driving record.  Driving records show your history of speeding tickets and other traffic violations.  It is common practice for car insurance companies to increase premiums for drivers with more speeding and traffic violations, so it is important to know what to do if you have been issued a speeding ticket.

The simplest way to resolve any issues concerning a speeding ticket is to pay the fine either in court or by mail.  In doing so you are admitting your guilt.

If you feel you are not guilty you can contest the ticket.  If you contest the ticket and the court does not find significant evidence against you because an officer did not properly fill out paper work, etc. you may be able to have the ticket dismissed.

Lastly, you can ask a judge for approval to take either an online, video or classroom driving safety course.  Taking a driving safety course will remove the violation from your record and insurance companies will not be able to charge you more for the ticket.

Common car insurance discounts

Posted on October 1st, 2010 No Comments

Purchasing car or other vehicle insurance may seem like an expensive and difficult task.  However, with Auto Insurance Rate Comparison that is not the case.  Fortunately, most auto insurance companies offer a variety of common car insurance discounts that you may be eligible for.

For example, auto insurance providers offer discounts to drivers who drive less frequently.  Driving less frequently means less wear and tear on your vehicle and a lower risk of being in an accident.  For these reasons, if you often take public transportation or do not have to drive very frequently for whatever reason, you may be eligible for a discount.

In addition, if you have a teenage son or daughter who shows responsibility in high school or college you could be eligible for a discount.  Car insurance providers recognize that young drivers who are responsible in one area of their life are more likely to be responsible drivers.

Car insurance providers also will provide discounts to drivers who avoid risky behavior.  People who have a history of avoiding risky behavior are often less likely to

be risky drivers.
